Toilet Quick Fix
The toilet in our master bath has an inconsistent leak. <sarcasm>I just love troubleshooting inconsistencies </sarcasm>
The video below shows the source of the problem. The toilet’s filler valve is spraying water during a flush/fill. The water is deflected by the tank lid and occasionally splashes out on the tank.
The toilet is a Kohler San Rafael K-3397-eb. I found a universal replacement part for the entire filler valve assembly for $17 on Amazon, but after some additional research, I discovered that it is not a replacement my discontinued 84499 model.
After some additional googling, it appears you can aftermarket replacements…for upwards of $89.
Time for some MacGyver-ing. I could not actually localize the leak but it generally seems to be near the blue stem thingy. I thought about using some caulk or sealant but was afraid I would muck up some operation.
Instead, I found a rubber washer/spacer in my junk drawer and just hung it on the blue stem thingy. It generally deflects the water there and little gets to the tank lid to splash out. This appears to solve the leaking.
We will see…
