The sculpture, officially known as &#8220;<strong>Two Rectangles, Vertical Gyratory Up, Variation III<\/strong>&#8220;, was created by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Rickey\">George Rickey<\/a>\u00a0who was an adjunct professor of art in the School of Architecture at RPI from 1961 to 1966.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The origin of the name has been attributed to an article in the campus humor magazine,&nbsp;<em>The Unicorn<\/em>. The article was titled &#8220;I am Joe&#8217;s Chrinitoid&#8221; and included an illustration that resembled the sculpture. The Unicorn referenced The Chrinitoid in a second issue with a cover story titled &#8220;The Chrinitoid Crisis&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft:Chrinitoid#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;featuring a parody of the sculpture portraying its iconic panels as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slide_rule\">slide rule<\/a>s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chrinitoid was also referenced in Steve Stanton and Tom White&#8217;s parody work &#8220;Not the Rensselaer Handbook&#8221;<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft:Chrinitoid#cite_note-:1-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Chrinitoid<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; n. (RPI) Two Rectangles Vertical Gyratory Up, a kinetic metal sculpture which was lent to the Institute by the sculptor, George Rickey, a professor at RPI from 1961 to 1966. Often confused with meteorological equipment on the Science Center. Although gone, it may be coming back.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>~ Not the Rensselaer Handbook<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chrinitoid was removed from campus in 1984<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft:Chrinitoid#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and moved to Rickey&#8217;s workshop in East Chatham, NY. It was sold to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UBS\">UBS<\/a>&nbsp;in 1990<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft:Chrinitoid#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;and installed at their Schanzenbr\u00fccke-Building in Zurich<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft:Chrinitoid#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sculpture was originally built in 1970 and stood 35&#8242; tall. Each of the rectangular panels are 19&#8217;6&#8243; x 59&#8243;. In a 1979 interview<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draft:Chrinitoid#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>, Rickey mentioned the dimensions of a similar variant (Two Rectangles Vertical Gyratory II, Variation IV) as 20&#8242; long, 5&#8242; wide and 10&#8243; thick, each weighing about 1000 pounds and the post weighed about ton and a half and was rated to withstand winds of 80 miles per hour.
