- Welcome to Subject: Sniffy
This is home to the adventures of Sniffy the Cat in the the wonderful world of physics.
Sniffy was originally the brainchild of Mark Salvacion, a good friend from Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, NJ. Sniffy was created in the margins of class notes and was regularly the victim of a roving pack of “renegade carnivorous squirrels”.
Sniffy was adopted by Tom Payne (myself) where he travelled to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and journeyed through the margins of Tom’s class notes, most often in Physics class.
These are the adventures of Sniffy the Cat.

- Scuba Sniffy
“Sniffy is scuba diving for the Rensselaer Freshwater Institute. While at 500 ft, Sniffy’s valve is stuck open at a rate of 3 gal/minute. How long does Sniffy have before he will get the bends?”
“Due to the buoyancy of air in the water, Sniffy experiences a force upward equal to the weight of the water he displaces. With what velocity will Sniffy be ejected from the lake?”
- Sniff Egg Drop
“Sniffy is holding a grade A fresh egg. If Sniffy is thrown from the seventh floor of the JEC, will Sniffy be able to walk to the egg drop bullseye after contact with the JEC patio?”
The JEC is RPI’s Johnson Engineering Center. The Egg Drop refers to an annual engineering challenge at Rensselaer.
- Sniffy Pepsi Commercial
“Sniffy is to appear as a hat in a forthcoming Pepsi commercial staring Michael Jackson” – I have no idea what this was about. Clearly a dated reference from the 1980’s.
- Early Sniffy: Canon Ball
I believe this is the handy work of Sniffy’s creator, Mark Salvacion.
